The Making of #105

I got so lucky today. I had a vague idea of doing something with “Catch-22,” but it would involve aviator goggles (which I don’t have) and a military-style cap (which I also don’t have).
I didn’t even know when I would do my 365 shot, since I had to be at work at 9am (that didn’t *quite* happen), work half a day, then go hang out with Jhimli, then go back to work until midnight.
I had mentioned a couple of days ago that I had had a failed shoot with an idea for “The Grapes of Wrath” when it started to rain while I was taking the shot. Brave girl that I am, I just threw a towel over the camera and kept shooting. With the towel, however, I couldn’t look through the viewfinder. What I saw when I uploaded the photos were pictures of a tree behind me. In other words, a total disaster for which I could have ruined my camera.
Around 1pm today, I went outside of work to get some fresh air (my manager likes keeping my workplace around 68 F, which is about 20 degrees cooler than I like) and I noticed some storm clouds building up. I suddenly realized that if I hurried, I might be able to re-do my shot.
I ran back inside, scrambled to get my work done, and ran out to my car. I drove home, praying that it wouldn’t start raining before I got my shot. I was literally throwing off my shoes and undoing my belt at the same time. I still had the clothes out I had used the last time (yeah, so I’m not a neat-freak), so those got tossed on with some sandals. Within 60 seconds of coming home, I was outside, setting up the shot.
In my haste, however, I grabbed my 21mm lens instead of the 43mm. I didn’t realize it until I got outside, and positioning me in the middle of the photo led to a lower third of cars, apartments, kids’ toys, and bushes. Not what I wanted at all. So I switched to multi-segment focus, aimed high, focused low, and came up with this. A lucky mistake, I think.
And wouldn’t you know, it never did rain. In fact, twenty minutes later, the clouds parted, the sun broke through, and we had a gorgeous blue sky the rest of the day.
