Baby Shooting

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

It’s slowly starting to dawn on me that photographers get paid what they do because this stuff ain’t easy. I tried my hand at baby shots (specifically, with Micah and Cara’s baby) again today, with better lighting, more control over backgrounds and backdrops, and a variety of clothing, and I think I had just as much (or as little) success as I did when all I had was crappy hospital lighting and a bright blanket as a background.

The problem as I see it is just that babies move. A lot.  They also cry. Surprisingly, the baby stopped crying when I whistled “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Unsurprisingly, then, most of my shots were taken while whistling.

First, the decent pics:

When I headed back over to Cara and Micah’s to show them the pics, we decided to try a few more of the classical baby-on-dad’s-arm thing. I realize now that I should look more closely at those photos to see how the baby is held, because a) I refuse to hold a baby myself because I’m terrified of dropping it; and b) I can’t figure out how the baby’s head is suppose to be supported while the hand is under the head. We tried our best (through much, much laughter), and this was the “best” we came up with:

Yeah, not exactly award-winning, but thankfully Micah and Cara have me booked every week until the baby is 18, so hopefully we’ll get something better next week ;)

It’s Official.
