My understanding is that traditionally a similar effect might have been achieved if using flash with similar macro subjects as the flash power illuminates the nearby object but the further background ends up way underexposed. Another 'secret' ingredient you added to this mix was the use of the vignetting controls which I haven't yet touched in my two months of using LR. It's good to know some tricks as LR is rather limited in terms of local edits and like many people I don't have much time to fully photoshop images.
